Day 3

Day 3. Stayed last night in Lusk WY. So far finding and reserving places to stay at night has been all over the place. Up at Devil’s Tower, it was find an empty campsite and stuff a twenty in a payment envelope. Last night was an internet search while parked at a gas station, call a campground, and just show up: no name or license plate number collected, paid in cash. Tonight’s camp is a Colorado State Park and they only do online or 1-800 calls (40 minutes and three separate phone calls, such fun). I wonder how many other methods I’ll find before I go home.

Mostly driving today, but I did stop in Colorado Springs at a strange little shop called Novis Mortem and bought a couple of oddities. More on those later, as one was not going to survive a flight home and had to be shipped. My first non-gas station/grocery store meal was in Manitou Springs CO, a place called Swirl. Decent food, decent prices. Manitou Springs is a touristy town, from what I saw, like Wisconsin Dells, but fewer billboards and more skiing. I did see a carved wooden bear, holding a sign saying CHEESE though. I guess all tourists love cheese, not just WI ones. Nice scenery.

Forecast is promising in the Carlsbad area, in the southeast corner of New Mexico. Maximizing my chances means I have to leave Colorado sooner than I would like; I hope to make it to Carlsbad tomorrow. Long day of driving, must sleep well tonight.
